let me provide you with information about the SYNGEAR BELT DRIVE VW BEETLE which I admit looks very strange.
I have invented this type of belt when preparing for a job as patent engineer for IWIS CHAINS Germany in 2008. The innovation potential of the roller chain I found extremely limited. So, I thought about a steel belt which is supporting purely rolling on a disc surface AND engaging in a teeth system for transmitting a synchronized rotational movement between discs. This was the main intention when developing this steel belt. During long lasting tests with far more than one hundred million belt cycles I was able to qualify the system for low power applications.
Per accident I found that the steel belt, more precisely the razor blade steel, likes running on cast nylon discs. Both materials have no abrasive effect on each other, so there is no wear on the disc and on the steel surface. Additionally I found that the static friction coefficient of the material pairing with steel and cast nylon is lower than the sliding friction coefficient. This means that the impact load during engine start or shut down or acceleration or deceleration is NOT transmitted to the disc surface at once but transmitted within a short time period which reduces the load on the belt and the disc.
The most advantage versus standard belt systems is that the steel belt is running WITHOUT producing heat by deformation energy. So, when you want to transmit 1.0 kilowatt you get 1.0 kilowatt on the other disc. You are NOT heating the environment. You can see this phenomenon when you replace your standard rubber belt by the steel belt. The engine will run after restart with a higher idle speed than before with the standard rubber belt.
At the very beginning of the developing process, I was sure the system has only a chance when I test it under demanding conditions with heat, humidity, vibrations and shock loads. Therefore, I bought a VW Beetle built in Mexico with a 1200 cc engine in 2009. So, since 2009 I have been evaluating the system EVERY day. It was an evolutionary process. I modified the openings in the belt members more than fifty times. This was only possible by using the laser cutting industry. So, I did crack mathematics, modified the opening type of the belt members found not working, and sent a new file to the laser cutting company. At the end I found an opening configuration which showed no cracks during millions of cycles.
The partner of the belt member is the clip. It is an arc shaped spring made of a copper alloy. This is the STRONGEST spring ever designed on earth. It can carry a load fifty thousand times of its weight which is 0.2 g and this for millions of cycles. Also, the design of this clip has experienced an evolutionary process.
And now I am ready. I founded a company (see syngear.de) and I am producing with partner companies the belt members, the clips and the cast nylon discs for the use at different industrial applications.
